Visa entitlements

The exact entitlements depend upon whether the visa subclass is migration/permanent residency or temporary residency.

Initially all visas are granted with restricted work rights, preventing the holder from seeking employment with an employer other than the visa sponsor and thus means the visa applicant is in some sense reliant on a particular employer’s sponsorship.

Permanent residents are able to live, work and study in Australia indefinitely. In addition they are entitled to public health care administered through the Australian federal Government’s Medicare scheme. Children permanent residents aged 6-18 years can attend Australian public (government-funded) schools and pay the same fees as other students. Dependent children aged over 18 years may be entitled to attend Australian tertiary institutions and pay only the fees applicable to local students as opposed to the higher fees charged to international students.

Generally for permanent residents there is a 2-year waiting period for social security payments, including sickness and unemployment benefits.

Temporary Residents are generally not entitled to Medicare, nor government-funded education or social security benefits. In addition to purchase property in Australia temporary residents must also gain approval from the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB).
