Best time to exchange pounds for Australian dollars in almost 3 weeks

25.03.2013

Peter Lavelle

Welcome to Pure FX's latest update of the pound to Australian dollar exchange rate.

Sterling flies!

It's the best time to exchange pounds for Australian dollars in almost 3 weeks this week, or since the 7th March, as the pound hits 1.466.

To put this into context, sterling was as low as 1.4381 on the 12th March. Hence, it's since climbed +1.94%, or almost 3 cents.

A £250,000 transfer would hence be worth $6,795 more today than 12th March.

(Please bear in mind, 1.466 is the interbank rate at the time of writing. This means the exchange rate may have changed since then.)

Pound may struggle to rise higher against the Australian dollar

Looking ahead, I think the pound may struggle to rise higher against the Australian dollar. This is because:

1. The pound may soon fall, as data this week is expected to confirm the UK shrank -0.3% at the end of last year.

2. Sterling could soon come under pressure, as credit rating agency Fitch puts the UK on 'Negative' outlook.

Therefore, this may be the best pound to Australian dollar exchange rate available for the moment!

Obviously the legislative changes in relation to the new Skilled Occupation List (SOL) for General Skilled Migration (GSM) purposes has had and will continue to have far reaching consequences in terms of the Student Visa Program numbers.

In the past, some overseas students may have made educational decisions on the basis of choosing a course which could lead to obtaining a Pre Application Skills Assessment (PASA) in an occupation which would allow them to meet the Basic Requirements and Pass Mark for the Skilled Visa Points Test. It increasingly became evident that educational choice  and outcomes had little to do with employment outcomes. The move to a demand driven GSM program has significantly changed the landscape.
