Skilled Migrant Selection Model

DIAC are considering introducing on 1 July 2012 a new General Skilled Migration (GSM) visa application model which will incorporate an electronic system based upon a 2-stage process:

1. Prospective applicants first submit claims for skilled migration through an online Expression of Interest (EOI)
2. Prospective applicants may be invited to make a visa application.

Invitations to apply for a visa will be issued at regularly scheduled intervals, beginning in January 2013.

An EOI

 can only be made online
 are not visa applications
 a Bridging visa will not be granted when an EOI is made.
 would not have access to merits review by the Migration Review Tribunal (MRT)

EOI applicants would provide:
 basic biographical information
 occupation
 details of work experience
 level of English language ability
 point they claim on Point Test where applicable
 select the skilled visas they are interested in
 Skills assessments (eg, Job Ready Program)

Documents are not required when submitting an EOI and information in the database can be updated if circumstances change.
An EOI would remain in the database for two years after submission. An EOI would be removed once a permanent or provisional visa had been granted.

Visa applications lodged prior to the implementation of the Model would be processed in accordance with any priority processing direction in effect at that time.
