Today the Australian Parliament passed the Australian Citizenship Amendment (Citizenship Testing) Bill 2007.

It is expected that the Citizenship Test will commence on 1 October.

Australian Citizenship provides for an overriding commitment to Australia, our laws, our values and our community.

It is important that Australian citizens understand the values that guide us and how our society works.

A citizenship test provides the means of ensuring that prospective citizens have such an understanding.

Special arrangements will be made for those with low levels of literacy and those with special needs.

The new test will only apply to those seeking to become citizens, not those migrating and settling in Australia on permanent or provisional visas.
