Labour Market Trends

The Australian government led by John Howard has made significant industrial Relations reform which have resulted in structural improvements in the workplace over the last decade. These reforms have contributed to the growth in job creation and productivity. In the last two years, employment has grown by more than 2% per annum.

Statistics also indicate that in 1999 - 2000, 24% of the labour force was comprised of employees born in countries other than Australia.

More recently there has been a significant shift from employment in the manufacturing industries to service industries. Approximately 36.5% of Australians now work in professional, technical, managerial or administrative jobs.

Working Conditions

In Australia there are laws in place which regulate employment and working conditions. Under the Workplace Relations Act 1996 , federal or state awards (collective agreements between the government and an industry group, or an employer and a group of employees and the government), or individual workplace agreements guarantee employees working conditions, minimum rates of pay, allowances, overtime, hours of work, holiday/sick leave and the right of freedom of association (option to join a trade union or any other organization).
