Generally, financial assistance through social security payments from Centrelink (the federal government body responsible for administering the Social Security system) are only available to people who reside in Australia and are either Australian citizens or holders of permanent visas. In addition, most social security payments and concession cards, except for the Family Tax Benefit and Child Care Benefit, have a 2 year newly arrived resident's waiting period. That is, upon arrival in Australia as a permanent resident, there is a 2 year waiting period before you are entitled to receive social security payments including sickness, unemployment and student benefits from Centrelink.

Therefore it is essential that you have sufficient funds to support yourself and your family for your first 2 years in Australia. Visa applicants sponsored by a relative in Australia should ensure their sponsor is fully aware of their sponsorship obligations over this 2 year period.
