Visa Entitlements

Permanent Visa Entitlements

Permanent resident visa holders have the right to live and work in Australia indefinitely and are entitled to receive public health care (Medicare). Generally permanent residents face a two-years (2 years) waiting period before being eligible to receive any social security payments.

Permanent residents also have full working rights meaning you can seek employment for any employer in any occupation. Employment in the Australian Public Service or Defence Force is usually restricted to Australian citizens.

After living in Australia for at least two years as a permanent resident, you may decide to apply for Australian citizenship, or you can continue to retain your current citizenship. As an Australian citizen, you can vote in Federal, State or local government elections or stand for election as a candidate in these elections.

Temporary Visa Entitlements

Temporary resident Parent visa holders, generally are not entitled to receive public health care (Medicare) or any other social security benefits.
